The purpose of this course is for students to learn the basic knowledge of the history of disaster in Japan.
（１）To become familiar with the history of disaster in Japan
（２）To examine the relationship with today’s issues on disaster in Japan
This course introduces the history of disaster from ancient times to modern times including disaster recovery by focusing on the social aspects. Students will examine the backgrounds and characteristics of each period and society and understand the relationship with today’s issues on disaster in Japan through classroom discussion.
This course is conducted in English. Instructor will translate into Japanese based on students’ understanding of the English language.
Attendance and participation 20%, Short response papers 10%, Final exam 70%
No textbook required. Reference books will be introduced in class.
Handouts will be distributed in class.

It is desirable to take the course entitled “Basic Knowledge to Understand History of Disaster”.
